I wonder what it is like to wake up happy and just be…
without the complications
of bills and work
and who’s going to make the coffee.
Is it possible to take a moment of bliss
and turn it into an hour, a day, a week, a year, a lifetime?
I wonder if it is possible to let go of the past
to grab the future that is so desperately calling us
promising it will be better and greener and sunnier
if we would just run for it…
But we will never catch it
because it is always one step ahead.
SO- if you cannot hold on to the past
and you cannot catch the future
all you really have is now.
NOW… loud and in stereo
but we ignore it like it was white noise in the doctor’s office
faded in last month’s magazines.
Now is the billboard sign that you have driven passed
day after day after day
and it never changes because
the routine is solid and functional
but yet we still have the nerve to complain.
I wonder what it would be like to grab someone and say
I will love you in as many nows as we have.
Cherishing each one as if it were our last,
making love, taking vacations, snuggling in blankets
enjoying Netflix binges and pizza on a rainy day.
Holding the kids, and the aging parents and friends
and taking the time to connect the dots of the threaded life
creating a tapestry of happiness for generations to come
Living in the now is what leads to that better future
and what we leave behind is the legacy of our lives –
I wonder what it is like to wake up happy and just be…
